After six years, Michael Culver is stepping down from his position as Chair at The Association of Lifetime Lawyers (ALL) with a new chair set to be announced in July.
The Association of Lifetime Lawyers, which was previously Solicitors for the Elderly, is a membership group for private client lawyers. The rebrand in June 2023 created an identify Culver describes as ‘more modern, more inclusive, and more relevant to today’s legal professionals.’ He adds it has helped grow the membership and enable the group to offer more to members.
Culver first joined the Association in 2008, not long after qualifying as a solicitor.
“At the time, there weren’t many spaces for private client lawyers to connect and learn from one another,”
he explains, adding
“Joining the board later on gave me the chance to give something back, and selfishly, to learn from peers doing great things at their own firms.”
During his time as Chair, the organisation navigated challenges head-on, including the Covid-19 pandemic.
“We had to adapt quickly, moving our conference online, supporting members through uncertainty, and still delivering real value. Coming out the other side stronger was a huge achievement.”
ALL has a voice when it comes to representing the interests of private client law nationally with Culver and the Board meeting with MPs on inheritance tax reform, regularly providing feedback to HMRC and the Office of the Public Guardian, and engaging on key issues like probate delays and banking access for attorneys and deputies. On his own highlights as Chair, Culver pays tribute to the ‘diverse and brilliant board.’
“Sitting around the table, virtual or in real life, with sharp legal minds, debating what’s best for members and the wider profession, is something I’ll really miss.”
Lakshmi Turner, CEO of The Association of Lifetime Lawyers, thanked Culver saying
“We’re grateful to Michael for his service over the last six years. Today, the Association is in a strong position, with a growing team, an active board and lots of plans to continue to equip our members so they can best support their clients and thrive in their careers. We look forward to announcing our new Chair in July.”
On the future Culver will remain part of ALL and is unequivocal about encouraging others to join
“Joining will make you a better lawyer. It’s as simple as that. We’re constantly learning in this field. No two days or clients are the same. Membership offers a goldmine of knowledge. It’s real-world learning, every day. And the training and resources provided are top tier.”
“(Being part of ALL) is about being part of something bigger. A network of people committed to legal excellence and empathy. We work with our clients at deeply emotional times, and this community helps ensure we do that with both skill and compassion. Being part of the association is, and will remain, a vital part of my practice. It’s truly been a privilege. I’ll still be around at events and supporting wherever I can. There are big things ahead and I know they’re in good hands.”
