The Law Society has awarded 16 scholarships as part of its Diversity Access Scheme (DAS).
Open to aspiring solicitors seeking to complete the legal practice course (LPE) or the solicitors qualifying exam (SQE), the scheme aims to promote social mobility and increase diversity within the legal professional, helping with funding, accessing paid work experience opportunities and providing mentoring for awarded individuals.
Gary Steel, a Diversity Access Scheme 2016 alumnus and interview panellist, said: “The standard of applications for the Law Society Diversity Access Scheme this year was incredible.
“We were genuinely blown away by the talent, passion and commitment shown by the applicants. Making a decision was not easy. Huge congratulations to all recipients of this year’s award.”
The eligibility criteria of the DAS were updated to encourage more disabled aspiring solicitors to apply and receive support.
Law Society president, Mark Evans, said: “I am thrilled to welcome 16 new students onto our Diversity Access Scheme this year. I am grateful to our sponsors, many mentors and work experience hosts who have made this possible.
“The legal profession must reflect the society it serves. It is imperative that people from all backgrounds are given the opportunity to join and succeed in this rewarding profession.
“I encourage any aspiring solicitor facing particular challenges to consider applying for a place on our scheme. I also invite sponsors interested in supporting our scheme to reach out to us.”
