Legal-focused mental health and wellbeing charity LawCare has confirmed the appointment of Mark Evans as its new Chief Executive. Evans’ takes up the role having completed his term as President of the Law Society of England and Wales
The charity, which is approaching its 30th anniversary, aims to reach more people across the legal sector and help make working in law healthier.
Prior to his role at the Law Society, Evans’ career has included managing a high street law firm, and working in legal education across 30 years’ experience working in the legal sector – a period over which he says much has changed across the profession.
“A huge amount has changed since I started my career in law more than 30 years ago” said Evans. “We talk much more openly about mental health and wellbeing now, but there’s still a lot to do. Working in law comes with pressures, but poor mental health shouldn’t simply be accepted as part of the job.”
“I am really excited to work with the LawCare team and wider legal community. LawCare is for everyone involved in law, whatever their role and at every stage of their career. There are still people who don’t realise LawCare is for them, and I want us to change that. If you’re struggling, it doesn’t matter what your job title is or where you work. We’re here for you.”
“Being there when someone needs support will always be a big part of what LawCare does but my work in legal education showed me how important it is to listen and learn from each other, and helps us to understand where things need to change.”
Evans joins at a time when its services are more in demand then ever. Its 2025 Impact Report published in February of this year identified increases across its functions supporting 753 people over the course of 2205, more than any previous year, including during the pandemic. The charity’s online chat function – which is offered alongside a telephone helpline – also saw an increase in users, up 13% on the previous year.
LawCare said it is now looking ahead at how it can reach more people and raise awareness of its support for everyone working in law, in every role and at every stage of their career, across the UK, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.
Welcoming Evans, Emma Williams, Chair of LawCare’s Board of Trustees, said: “Mark’s extensive experience across the legal sector will be hugely valuable to LawCare and indeed to our ability to support the profession as a whole.”
“We are all so excited for Mark’s leadership to take us into the next phase as we build on our foundations. There is a lot of work for us to do and we’re looking forward to doing it together.”
“I am confident that Mark’s arrival will help us supercharge our efforts and I am here for it all!”
Mark succeeds Elizabeth Rimmer, who stepped down as Chief Executive in June after more than 11 years with LawCare. Trish McLellan has served as Interim Chief Executive since June.
