A Southport based genealogist has become one of the first Chartered Paralegals under the new CILEX scheme after going through the pilot programme last year.
Claire Miller of Langton Genealogy joins a small cohort of professionals to be amongst the first to be accredited with the new “Chartered Paralegal” status following the Privy Council’s approval of updates to the CILEX Royal Charter.
Chartered Paralegals must demonstrate they have worked in a legal role for over five years and show extensive legal knowledge and competence across key duties and behaviours. It provides career paralegals with a formal status recognising their achievements say the body which has also launched a new register of CILEX Paralegals and CILEX Chartered Paralegals to enable employers and the public to check the regulated status and qualification credentials of those holding a professional paralegal status with CILEX.
Langton Genealogy is a genealogy and probate research company based in Southport that assists legal professionals to compile family trees for intestacy matters, trace missing beneficiaries and next of kin to resolve specialist estate claims. The business was co-founded by Miller in 2010 with her father who passed away in 2021 and after a period of readjustment she moved the business away from predominantly Bona Vacantia cases to focus on estate administration and locating missing beneficiaries.
Miller has been recognised at CILEX’s National Awards in the Best Probate Research Paralegal paralegal category for two consecutive years in 2023 and 2024 and Paralegal of the Year the Modern Law Awards 2025, in Manchester.
“I am delighted to officially announce that I am a Chartered Paralegal! The process was challenging but immensely rewarding. It involved an extensive application and interview process with a CILEX Assessor to demonstrate my competence at this level, as well as the ability to provide the appropriate advice and client care, which are of utmost importance to me.”
said Miller on her recognition.
