Older generations to pass on £400bn worth of property

Over £400 billion worth of property is expected to be passed from grandparents to younger generations during the next few decades.

However, despite this anticipated cascade of wealth, not everyone under 45 is set to benefit.

Research from Royal London indicated that out of the 17 million individuals between the ages of 25 and 44, just 4 million are in line to inherit property from homeowning grandparents.

With an aim to discover more about inheritance plans and expectations, the study gained a cross section of opinions from over 5,600 people, all from various generations.

The grandparents who took part were all homeowners, and the research revealed that on average, the typical estate they would leave would be valued between £400,000 and £500,000.

If that amount was left in the wills of just over 1 million people, this would result in over £400 billion being bequeathed across the UK.

The report stated that although those aged between 45 and 64 were the most likely demographic to receive the wealth, around 50% of grandparents stated that they plan to pass their wealth directly to their grandchildren.

Largely due to the uncertainty surrounding the future of the economy, just under two-thirds (62%) of those aged between 45 and 64 also expressed concern over the financial position of the younger generation. Similarly, 40% of the same category believe they are under pressure to pass on wealth.
