Law In Lockdown: The Will Writers Experience

Law In Lockdown: The Will Writers Experience

Writing wills must not take a back seat to the current Coronavirus lockdown with a practical approach required to ensure people receive the appropriate advice and guidance.

In a blog by Morecambe Bay Wills & Estates, Nicola Combe discusses the impact of Covid-19 on her business and clients and how she is managing the practicalities of business as usual.

Today’s Wills & Probate was introduced to Nicola Combe through the popular Women in Wills networking group to discuss her experiences of running her will writing business in lockdown.

Following senior roles with insurance giant AIG (not to mention addresses in New York, Singapore and London) Nicola set up her will writing business following the death of her husband in 2018.

A passionate believer in “affordable peace of mind,” Morecambe Bay Wills & Estates offers a range of estate planning services and raises money for cancer charity through donating 5% of her invoices to CancerCare.

As with much of the sector, Nicola has been grappling with the impact of lockdown and social distancing on a service that up to this point has been heavily reliant on face to face interaction.

In the absence of sector guidance from government Nicola takes a pragmatic approach; conducting consultations via phone, video call and in some cases face to face; with the necessary social distancing and PPE precautions.

“We are key workers” says Nicola, “and we’re providing an important service to people who need reassurance at this time.”

rustrated by the sensationalism of claims wills have been  “signed on car bonnets” she urges the sector to take a sensible approach. Accounting for the needs and concerns of clients, Nicola cites one home visit she conducted to an elderly, terminally ill, and partially deaf client (appropriately socially distanced and PPE’d as an example of this approach.

Today’s Will & Probate has spoken to a number of practitioners about their experience of lockdown and how they are managing client expectations and delivery. Read more here: https://todayswillsandprobate.co.uk/main-news/coping-demand-complying-advice/
