Anderson Strathern enhance Private Client Team

As Scotland’s second largest private client practice with a team of over 50, Anderson Strathern has offices across Edinburgh, Glasgow and East Lothian. Highlighting its appetite for acquisitions, the firm states it will continue to invest “significantly” in its private client practice, as issues such as Scottish Independence and Brexit impact wealthy clients. The firm is looking at the available opportunities to bring in talent by way of lateral hires through continual consolidation within Scotland’s legal sector, as well as acquiring smaller firms.

The firm attained Jeffrey Aitken, a Glasgow based private client firm, in April and in 2015 it also hired the former head of private client (Scotland) at DWF, Anne Henderson.

Colin Henderson, head of private client at Anderson Strathern, views matters like pensions, indyref2 and Brexit as three of the key issues on the horizon for Scotland’s high net worth community. These bring in equal measure both challenges and opportunity, as 2016 comes to a close

He stated: “We are seeing increasing demand for legal and wealth management advice, with individuals facing changes and uncertainty to the law of succession, inheritance of pension pots and the tax treatment of income and savings continuing to dominate our dealings with clients – all against the backdrop of Brexit and indyref2.

“Within our practice, it’s satisfying that we’re bringing through so much young talent and with consolidation within the legal sector on the increase we fully expect to expand further with lateral hires.”

Murray McCall, Managing Partner stated: “We continue to identify opportunities in the market which may translate to acquisitions in the near to medium term.”

Recent promotions within the firm have also indicated that Anderson Strathern’s succession is not limited to private estate planning. Specialising in tax advice, Martin Campbell has been promoted to partner. Also, both Sophie Li and Susie Stewart, who take care of family and legal office affairs across generations of high net value clients, have become senior associates.

Sarah Thurston has become a senior solicitor and Alastair Johnstone has been promoted to associate, both of whom work in the main areas of private client services of associated succession planning and wills.

Mr Henderson further commented on the positive impact of the firm’s promotions: “The new promotions focus on the key areas of family succession planning, family office services and specialist tax advice and add real value for our clients.”
