ONS releases deaths recorded in August 2022

Number of deaths in England and Wales for August revealed

The monthly rates of death for England and Wales for August 2022 have been released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Figures show there were 47,312 deaths across England and Wales for August, which is slightly below the monthly average in 2022 which stands at 47,350.

However, this is slightly higher than last year’s recorded number of deaths for August, as in August 2021 the number of deaths was £43,066.

However, the five-year average for deaths in August, from 2016-present, stands at 14.4%, meaning this year’s average above average, standing at 16.4%.

The leading cause of deaths in England and Wales for August was dementia and Alzheimer’s disease which accounted for 11.4% of all deaths in England and 11.6% of all deaths in Wales.

There were three recorded heat-periods in August 2022 which correlated with higher daily death occurrences, on average, in August.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) remained the sixth leading cause of death in England, accounting for 3.3% of death in England, but fell to seventh leading cause of death in Wales, accounting for 3% of all deaths.

It is noted that not all deaths can be confirmed in each month until the final annual data are released.

  1. Interesting that there’s been a noticeable downturn in deaths in the last 12 months. Does anyone foresee a continuing lower trend of deaths, and therefore probate, for the next few years as we recover from the increase number of fatalities during the coronavirus crisis?
