Lubna Shuja has become the Law Society of England and Wales’ vice president raising the prospect for the first time of two consecutive women presidents in the organisation’s history when she steps up to the top job in 2022.
With I. Stephanie Boyce now installed as president, it’s also the first time two people of colour hold the top two roles at the solicitors’ body.
Lubna has been a Law Society council member since 2013 and chair of our key Membership and Communications Committee since 2018. She is also a member of the Law Society Board.
Lubna is principal solicitor at Legal Swan Solicitors in Birmingham. She specialises in professional discipline and regulation. She is also a mediator dealing with civil and family disputes.
Lubna said:
“I am thrilled to be elected to this position and I look forward to facing the challenges ahead and working alongside the other office holders and staff. I am proud to be a solicitor and am keenly aware of the issues facing our profession and the public at this exceptionally difficult time.
“I want to support our members to meet those challenges, whilst also ensuring that the profession maintains its prominence nationally and internationally, through various campaigns including access to justice and the rule of law.
“I look forward to working with Stephanie during her 18-month term and will support her as she implements her three-point plan increasing diversity, addressing the role of technology in access to justice, and promoting good mental health and the rule of law.”
I. Stephanie Boyce, president of the Law Society, said:
“I want to give my heartfelt congratulations to Lubna. I am sure her tenure will prove to be a great success.”
