Blended family case study explored at The Association of Lifetime Lawyers National Conference in June

The Association of Lifetime Lawyers National Conference 2024 takes place on Thursday 20th June 2024 at The Shaw Theatre, London. Five expert speakers will guide attendees through a colourful case study to explore the issues that arise after health issues, family changes, and death.

This year’s speaker line-up includes:

  • Caroline Bielanska, Consultant Solicitor and mediator
  • Ian Bond, Partner at Irwin Mitchell
  • Tom Dumont KC, Radcliffe Chambers
  • Cate Searle, Head of Community Care Law at Martin Searle Solicitors
  • Kirsty Limacher, Chief Legal Officer at The Association of Lifetime Lawyers

Together, they’ll unpick the key legal issues that come out of the case study covering everything from Inheritance Tax considerations to capacity and Trust issues.

This year’s case study “It’s A Family Affair”, focuses on Ricky and Stephanie’s blended family, and some of the challenges they face as they navigate health issues, starting a family, and death. Speaking on this year’s conference, CEO of The Association of Lifetime Lawyers, Lakshmi Turner said:

“The National Conference is an important date on the private client calendar and a highly anticipated event. Our case study format brings the sessions to life and maximises the professional development opportunities on offer.

With such an interesting and detailed case study, combined with an excellent line-up of speakers, the 2024 conference is not one to be missed.”

Following an address by Chair of The Association of Lifetime Lawyers, Michael Culver, The Association’s Kirsty Limacher will speak on Ricky and Stephanie’s wills and LPAs. She will provide legal advice on their unique circumstances.

Kirsty specialises in Wills, Estate Administration, Powers of Attorney, and older and vulnerable client matters. She is a passionate advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights and aims to provide a safe space for members of the community and allies to access advice on their personal affairs.

Ian Bond, Partner at Irwin Mitchell, will then address inheritance tax in relation to Ricky’s parents’ Tom and Barbara’s home, and the protection of social media accounts after death.

Ian is a partner in Irwin Mitchell’s Lifestyle & Estate planning team dealing with all aspects of Private Client work; including trust formation, administration and termination; wealth succession; and estate planning.

Following this, Caroline Bielanska will look at capacity issues regarding Max, a soon to be 18-year-old male on the autistic spectrum. Max is looking to buy a car, but his father Ricky is concerned about his ability to manage his finances.

Caroline is an expert in her field and is recognised as a leading expert on the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and health and social care law.

Tom Dumont KC will kick off the afternoon session by providing insight on inheritance claims for Stephanie and her unborn surrogate baby, and the potential for disputing a will.

Tom is one of the leading practitioners in the area of wills and estates. In 2018, the Law Commission invited him to be one of only two barristers on their expert panel assisting it on the revision of the Law of Wills.

Completing the line up is Community Care and Public Law Specialist, Cate Searle, who will cover Tom’s terminal illness and Barbara’s dementia diagnosis. She will then guide attendees through safeguarding vulnerable relatives, and Powers of Attorney in relation to reduced mental capacity.

Cate specialises in Court of Protection litigation, mental capacity, safeguarding adults at risk, and funding disputes with Health & Social Services.
