The Institute of Professional Willwriters (IPW) conference closed today after two days of informative presentations and networking opportunities.
More than 100 delegates heard from key figures in the wills and probate industry including talks from high profile speakers today such as Stephen Mason, who is leading the review of the Legal Services Act; and Mary MacGregor, Senior Lawyer at the Office of the Public Guardian.
Stephen Mason is a barrister and Honorary Professor of Law at University College London. He gave a fascinating presentation outlining the work he is doing in reviewing how the legal sector is currently regulated. Through extensive consultation, the review is covering the fundamentals of how the profession is regulated – nothing is off the table and all options will be considered. Stephen confirmed that his final report would be published in January 2020 and encouraged IPW and ISPW members and will writers generally to engage with the review and make their views known so that they can be taken in to consideration in preparing the final report.
Mary MacGregor of the Office of the Public Guardian gave a very useful talk about Lasting Powers of Attorney, construction, severances and determinations.
IPW Chair Dennis Gardener said: “We’re delighted with the numbers of both members and non-members attending our annual conference and would very much like to thank all the delegates for attending and for contributing to the discussions. We’re also very appreciative of the support from our sponsors without whom this event would not be possible.
“As well as satisfying the constitutional requirements of the Institute, the annual conference is the perfect forum for members and others to meet, share ideas and experiences, gain new knowledge and insights and give feedback to the IPW on the services provided through the year and to let us know what else you would like to see offered as part of your membership.”
Conference delegate Kevin Lynch, a Partner at Birmingham-based law firm Wilkes specialising on contentious probate, said: “Thank you very much to the IPW and ISPW and the sponsors of the 28th Willwriting Academy National Conference and AGM for hosting a very professional, informative and engaging conference. As a delegate I found the conference to be an excellent opportunity to meet new contacts as well as to catch up with clients and friends in a friendly and informal atmosphere.”
Today’s Wills and Probate (TWP) is delighted to be the official media partner and sponsor of the conference.
Karen Babington, MD of Solve Legal Marketing (publishers of TWP) said: “The IPW conference is a landmark in the calendar of wills and probate practitioners and provides a really valuable opportunity to meet with peers, make new contacts and refresh knowledge about the technical issues and business issues that affect us all.
“We’re keen supporters of the IPW and its work and enjoy providing marketing support services, such as the newly-published guide to the benefits of membership designed by Solve and launched at the conference.”
