Over the next few months, SFE are covering an important range of topics in older client law in their upcoming online webinars, including tax updates, advice for probate practitioners and welfare benefits for the older client.

Iris Wϋnschmann-Lyall will provide a tax update for the older client advisor as well as a summary of the OPG’s IHT simplification considerations on 6th May. Iris will look at the tax consequences of these and the advantages and disadvantages of common financial products which are often sold to older clients, such as loan trusts and discounted gift trusts. Iris qualified as a solicitor after studying law at Cambridge University and is a consultant with Tax Action specialising in the area of trust and estate taxation.

Ian Bond will cover probate applications on 10th June providing a recap on the changes made to the application process by HMCTS to date. Ian will also explore the introduction of the mandatory online procedure for obtaining grants of representation, the common issues relating to this and how to overcome them. Lastly, he’ll set out some expectations for the future of the online application process. Ian is Director and Head of Wills & Estates at Thursfields Solicitors and member of the Law Society of England and Wales.

Alan Robinson will look at welfare benefits for the older client on 8th July. The session will cover pensions, the different benefits available to older clients, the qualifying conditions and where problems are likely to occur. Alan recently retired from legal practice after 40 years working in a private legal practice, a Citizens Advice Bureau, a law centre and welfare rights agencies.
