As the world begins to change, and we all start to adapt to life after lock down, there are probably lots of things people are starting to consider.
Personal issues, such as sending children back to school and starting back at work are things that cross most people’s mind. Will the environment be safe enough to protect me and my family from Covid-19? But what about other issues that we should also be mindful of? Such as security?
Now that lock down measures are beginning to ease, and people are taking the jump to go back to work, or altering the way they worked once more. It seems imperative to give a little reminder about the importance of security, both cyber and physical with regards to documents you may have both on and offline.
In a report recently released by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), it has been revealed that non-cyber incidents outweighed cyber incidents in the final quarter of 2019.
Human error was still the main culprit with regards to the errors. Out of the 2629 incidents reported the ICO in the final quarter:
- 337 were due to data being emailed to the incorrect recipient
- 265 were due to data being posted or faxed to the incorrect recipient
- 213 were due to the loss/theft of paperwork or data left in an insecure location
In comparison the cyber related incidents were 280 reports due to phishing attacks and 175 reports of unauthorised access.
Although cyber crime is a real threat to businesses and people alike, it’s imperative that precautions are also in place to prevent other security issues from arising.
Double checking recipient details and keeping paperwork in secure places, all seem like common sense. But as we’ve been adapting to our new work environments, some bad habits may have begun to creep in. Nipping these in the bud will help to reduce the incidents you could create both on and offline.
