HMRC has published guidance on how to find the value stocks and shares of someone who has died for the purposes of calculating Inheritance Tax (IHT).

The guide covers both listed and unlisted stocks and shares, and gives guidance on how to find values using either a share valuing service or by finding the value yourself.

Detailed examples are given, and step-by-step methods are outlined to help work out the total value of the shares, in addition to working out the value of a bonus or dividend.

Information about stock exchange markings is also explained.

The guide is published on the HMRC website and may be accessed here.
