A charity platform to make historical probate records more widely available is seeking funding to launch FreePROBATE (FreePRO), a comprehensive probate search platform that will digitise and transcribe over 7.5m entries from government probate books dating back generations.
Free UK Genealogy is a registered charity working to make the records freely accessible to the public but can only achieve it through funding. This week only, the Big Give Christmas Challenge is seeking to raise funds for the development of the platform; with donation matched pound-for-pound until the match funding is exhausted.
The ambition is to make records currently difficult or impossible to access through official channels easier to access; including exact dates of death, residential addresses, occupations, family relationships, executors, beneficiaries, and property ownership details; invaluable for family historians, social researchers, and anyone seeking to understand the history of their home or community.
